New York Road Runners is the organization behind the world-famous New York Marathon, which runs through all five boroughs of New York City. Web Performance was brought in in 2009 and again in 2010 to test the servers than provide live race information to the millions of fans world-wide. In any given race there are approximately 40,000 runners participating, with 20-30 runners crossing the finish line per second, and their progress through the course is updated live as the race progresses. Fans register to monitor the status of one or more runners in real time, and these individual status pages are updated continuously. Web Performance tested and tuned the capacity of the Athlete Tracking Website up to a level of 60,000 concurrent users, and the site performed admirably during the actual race.
As part of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, the State of Florida implemented the End of Grade testing as an online web-based application. These tests are administered to all children in public schools grades K-12 in Florida over a several day period, resulting in peak loads of 60,000 concurrent users. Web Performance, Inc. was engaged by the website contractor, Infinity Software Development, Inc. to help them tune the website to perform at these levels. The tests themselves consisted of a series of forms, each of which was different for each grade, and each skill level within the grade, resulting in a complex matrix of test cases.
Massage Envy is an incredibly successful francise, opening around 20 new stores a month even in the middle of a recession. Although massages are delivered locally, their website is an integral part of their business, detecting the location of visitors, and directing them to local stores. The presense of so many local stores makes a massage gift card an easy choice for the last minute shopper, and generates a huge amount of revenue in the last few days before Christmas. Web Performance evaluated the current performance of their site and found bottlenecks that would have caused major problems during the all important season between Thanksgiving and Christmas. With the newly tuned software configuration Massage Envy was able to handle peak holiday load without adding hardware, which is crucial in keeping down costs the rest of the year.
